Richard Yohn Obituary

Richard “Dick” Yohn, 88, of Blain, passed from this earth and joined his Heavenly Father on January 7, 2021.  Dick was born at home on October 29, 1932 to the late Ralph and Mary (Neidigh) Yohn of Loysville.  He is survived by his devoted wife of 65 years, Edith Irene (Reeder) Yohn, four children:  Richard (Kathy) Yohn, Jr. of New Germantown, Karen (Jeff) Gipe of Doylesburg, Wanda (Terry) Rohm of Buckhead, GA, and Keith (Jenn) Yohn of Blain; seven grandchildren:  Joshua (Nadine) Yohn proudly serving our country in the Marines based in Missouri, Darren (Brianne) Gipe of Three Springs, Klinton (Kelsey) Gipe of Spring Run, Kaitha (Luke) McMullen of Fannettsburg,  Tessa (Nicklous) Sitzmann of Athens, GA, Jared (Leslie) Rohm of  Madison, GA, and Vickie Decker of Washington; and ten great grandchildren:  Helena, Hailey, and Mason Yohn of Missouri, Kasen, Bransen and Jensen Gipe of Three Springs, McKenzie Sitzmann of Athens, GA, Liam and Finley Kate Rohm of Madison, GA, and Harley Decker of Washington.

In addition to his late parents, Dick was preceded in death by all his siblings:  Betty Rockwell, Raymond “Bunk” Yohn, Louise “Whittie” Rockwell, Ray “Jack” Yohn, and Joan McGarvey all of Loysville, Ruby Shanafelter of Blain, and Carl Yohn of Camp Hill.

Dick graduated with the class of 1951 of Blain Union High School, and proudly served his country in the Army, earning the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, ROK Presidential Unit Citation, and multiple Good Conduct Medals.  Dick worked construction for years.  He worked for the Shoe Factory, Box Factory, C.H. Maslands and Sons, and Sphear Construction.  He retired in 1994 from Holy Spirit Hospital following 35 years of service as both a Boiler Operator and within the Maintenance Department.

Dick was a member at the Zion United Church of Christ in Blain, where he volunteered as both an usher and a gentleman who enjoyed cutting up turkeys for the turkey suppers.  He was also a member of the Blain Lions Club, Blain Town Council, Blain Sportsman Club, where he was the Treasurer for 60 years, Sherman’s Valley Heritage Day, Blain Fire Company (life member), Blain Ambulance Club, American Legion Post #232 of Dry Run, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7463 of New Bloomfield.

Dick was well known for his well-tended, highly bountiful garden, running the cider press for 15 years at Shermans Valley Heritage Days, attending public sales, making peanut brittle at Christmas, picking black walnuts to sell, and tinkering on anything that needed to be repaired.  He was a social butterfly who loved to play cards -- Gin Rummy, Poker, Texas Hold’em and Bingo, listening to country music and square dancing.  He also enjoyed hunting (squirrel, rabbits, and deer), but was best known for his trout fishing skills, you could always find him along Shermans Creek with a pole in his hand.

Viewing times for Dick are Wednesday, January 13, 2021 from 6 to 8 PM in the newly renovated chapel of Nickel Lochstampfor Family Funeral Home in Loysville, and then Thursday, January 14, 2021 from 10 to 11 AM at Zion United Church of Christ in Blain.  The funeral service will immediately follow the viewing at 11 AM on Thursday, January 14 at Zion United Church of Christ, officiated by Pastor Mike Boehm.  Interment will follow in Blain Cemetery.
