Michael Schaeffer Obituary

Michael C. Schaeffer, fondly known as “Sarge”, age 70 of Elliottsburg, unexpectedly passed away in his home on November 3, 2023.  Born at home to the late Harriet B. (Hoke) Sease of Shippensburg on March 23, 1953, Mike is survived by his stepchildren:  Pamala Schaeffer-Dum (Dennis) of Elliottsburg, Daniel S. (Tara) Schaeffer of Hummelstown, and Tammy D. Clark-McFadden of New Bloomfield; eight step grandchildren; and a brother:  Jack Schaeffer of Hagerstown, MD.  In addition to his mother, he is also preceded in death by two half-brothers:  Joseph and Bobby Schaeffer.

As part of Mike’s high school education, he learned welding at York Vocational School.  Mike proudly joined and served in the United States Army as a light wheel vehicle mechanic from 1979 to 1993.  During his 19 years of service, he saw two tours of duty in Korea and one in the Gulf.  He earned the following decorations, medals, badges, citations, and campaign ribbons:  Army Service Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, and Expert Qualification Badge M-16 Rifle.  He also completed the Primary Leadership Development Course, Air Assault School, Motor Sergeant, and Advanced Noncommissioned Officer Course.  Upon returning to civilian life, he was a van driver for 15 years for Dum’s Bus Service, LLC, from which he retired in 2021.  He also drove for Pennsy Supply.

Naturally, Mike was very proud of his military service and held lifetime memberships at the Veterans of Foreign War Post 882 in Marysville and the American Legion Post 265 in Hummelstown.  Mike’s two passions were tinkering on cars (preferably muscle cars) and watching the Dallas Cowboys play football.  He loved his shoofly pie, chicken gizzards, scrapple, and SOS.

A memorial service with full military honors will be held at 12 noon on December 2, 2023 at the New Bloomfield VFW Post #7463, located at 71 Soule Road, New Bloomfield, PA  17068.
