John grew up as a military brat, and graduated from Ka Leilehua High School, Class of 1964 in Honolulu, HI. John joined the military and enlisted in the US Marine Corp and served from 1965 to 1969, during which time he earned the M-14 Marksman Rifleman Badge, National Defense Service Medal, and two Good Conduct Medals. Upon his return to civilian duty, he began driving truck and retired from Preston in 1978. He was a Man of God and an active member of Church of the Living Christ in Loysville.
