Charlotte Carlin Obituary

Charlotte E. (Smith) Carlin, 96, of Newville, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 27, 2020 at her home.

Born February 10, 1924 in Blain, she was the daughter of the late J. Clyde and Estella (Seibert) Smith and was also preceded in death by seven brothers and one sister.

She was the widow of Philip J. Carlin, who passed away in 1984 after over 37 years of marriage. Charlotte and Philip were the owners of Laurel Run Lodge, Landisburg, and following retirement and a move to Newville, Charlotte started babysitting in her home.

She was a member of the former Centerville Evangelical Lutheran Church and as part of a musical family, played piano in the Lutheran church of her youth in New Germantown. An avid snowmobiler, she was a member and treasurer of the (former) Timber Trails Snowmobile Club and generally loved being outdoors. When she was younger, she liked to go fishing and deer hunting, and, as long as she was able, enjoyed gardening. A true homesteader, she excelled at cooking and canning what she grew. Charlotte also crocheted beautifully, her hands were never idle. Forthright and spunky, she could be relied on to tell you the truth in a down to earth way, but still kept her dry sense of humor.

She was a charter member of the Carlisle Eagles Lodge Auxiliary and was a member of the Newville American Legion Auxiliary.

Surviving are her children: Phyllis “Teedee” E. Dechene, Newville and Philip “Flip” J. Carlin, Jr. (and his wife, Yvonne), Newville; one sister: Dottie Jane Linard, Maytown; one brother: Dennis Smith, Blain; 6 grandchildren: Philip J. Carlin, III, Brianne L. Carlin, Richard T. Dechene, Jr., Rene L. Diehl, Lane Wark, and Jennifer Lang; 4 great-grandchildren: Tatiana Cosme, Evan Carlin, Carlin Diehl, and Cassie Diehl; one great great-granddaughter: Juliet Cosme; and many nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. A celebration will be scheduled when it is safe for large gatherings.

Burial will be in Restland Cemetery beside her husband.

Contributions in her memory may be made to Friendship Hose Company EMS, 15 E. Big Spring Ave., Newville, PA 17241.
